Tourism earnings in Brazil reach 'historic high'

Tourism earnings in Brazil achieved a "historic record" during 2007, it has been revealed.

Data published by the Brazilian Central Bank has confirmed that 2007 was the best year in the history of Brazilian tourism in terms of foreign visitors' expenditure in the country.

Brazil reached US$4.953 billion in revenue, brought in by foreign tourism during the year in total.

It is a 14.76 per cent increase compared with the $4.316 billion (£2.15 billion) recorded in 2006.

Marta Suplicy, Brazil's minister for tourism, said: "This is great news to celebrate, stressing the importance of tourism - now the fifth item on the exports agenda - to the Brazilian economy."

Brazil has seen a 75% increase in foreign tourism between 2002 and 2007 as a direct result of the National Tourism Plan (developed in 2003).

And that is by no means the end of it, with foreign tourism is expected to grow by 4.3 per cent a year between 2007 and 2014 according to the World Tourism and Travel Council. This influx of visitors will increase demand for real estate and trigger price hikes.
